What is Pilates?

The method of Pilates exercise was developed in the early 1900's by dance instructor, Joseph Pilates in America. He developed the exercise for the rehabilitation and prevention of injury to his dancers. Pilates was revitalised in recent years and through clinical research has become recognised as a key way in which to aid recovery and prevent injury.

The body is made up of two main types of muscle; muscles that make dynamic movement and muscles that support our skeleton and help with posture. Pilates focuses on the inner core muscles that help support us and give us good posture.
Many people suffer with injuries such as back and neck pain. Experience and research tells us that the main reason this happens is due to excessive stress put on joints and muscles due to a weakness in the core postural muscles. A quick fix can often give temporary relief, but if the causes of spinal pain aren't corrected, pain tends to return and this is why Pilates is so widely used within Physiotherapy Clinics.

Modern day living is one of the root causes of poor posture and body awareness. Working environments and everyday stress can cause tension and pain. A body which sits in an office chair all day can be prone to weakening of postural muscles. Pilates allows us to strengthen these muscles and help reduce the stress put on other body structures.
While strengthening the core, Pilates will also enhance the efficiency and strength of our external muscles. For this reason it is widely used by sports men and women to enhance performance and prevent injury.
